Physical Therapy Protocols in Jacksonville, Florida

PT Protocols: A Resource for Patients and Physical Therapists

For patients recovering from hip or knee surgery, physical therapy is not a formality—it’s a critical part of the process. The exercises, progressions, and precautions that guide rehabilitation in the weeks and months after surgery have a direct impact on outcomes, and Dr. Redmond takes that seriously. He has developed detailed, procedure-specific PT protocols based on years of high-volume surgical practice and a close working relationship with the physical therapists who care for his patients.

Dr. John Redmond is a Mayo Clinic-trained orthopedic surgeon who performs hip arthroscopy, hip replacement, knee replacement, and a full range of hip and knee procedures at his Jacksonville practice. Each of his protocols is designed to guide physical therapists through the appropriate rehabilitation progression for a specific procedure, with clear phase guidelines, precautions, and exercise progressions. Physical therapists are encouraged to contact Dr. Redmond's office directly with any questions about a patient's progression.

Dr. Redmond is also developing an in-house physical therapy program at his Jacksonville clinic, which will allow patients to receive post-operative rehabilitation under the same roof as their surgical care. Updates will be available as that program comes online. In the meantime, all PT protocols are available for download below.

Procedure-Specific PT Protocols

The following protocols provide phase-by-phase rehabilitation guidelines for each procedure Dr. Redmond performs. They are designed as clinical roadmaps, not rigid recipes. Dr. Redmond encourages therapists to apply appropriate clinical judgment at each stage and to reach out with any questions about a specific patient's case.

  • Hip Scope Protocol: A five-phase protocol covering immediate through sport-specific rehabilitation following hip arthroscopy. Includes procedure-specific modifications for labral repair, capsular plication, microfracture, piriformis release, and gluteus medius repair. Therapy begins on post-op day one.
  • Gluteus Medius Protocol: Covers rehabilitation following gluteus medius repair, with 20-pound flat-foot weight-bearing for six weeks, modified ROM restrictions, and a progressive hip abductor strengthening program initiated at the six-week mark.
  • Hamstring Repair Protocol: A four-phase protocol for proximal hamstring repair rehabilitation, with toe-touch weight-bearing for six to eight weeks, no hamstring stretching for the first six weeks, and return-to-sport criteria targeting six to nine months post-op.
  • Anterior THA Protocol: Rehabilitation guidelines following direct anterior hip replacement. Includes walking goals of one mile by four to six weeks and two miles by six to eight weeks. No standard dislocation precautions, though combined extreme positions should be avoided. Patients may return to golf, tennis, cycling, surfing, and weight training at 12 weeks.
  • Total Knee Arthroplasty Protocol: Covers progressive ROM, strengthening, and gait rehabilitation following total knee replacement, from immediate post-op through return to sport-specific activities at 12 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are these protocols designed for?

The protocols are primarily intended for physical therapists, PTAs, and athletic trainers coordinating post-operative care for Dr. Redmond's patients. They provide the clinical framework and precautions specific to each procedure so that rehabilitation can proceed safely and effectively. Patients preparing for surgery may also find them useful for understanding what recovery will involve, though the protocols are written in clinical language intended for healthcare providers.

How soon after surgery does physical therapy begin?

It depends on the procedure. Following hip arthroscopy, therapy typically begins on post-operative day one. Following direct anterior hip replacement, patients are weight-bearing as tolerated immediately and begin PT in the first week with walking goals of one mile by four to six weeks. Following total knee replacement, therapy begins in the first week with progressive ROM and strengthening. Each protocol specifies the appropriate start point and phase criteria for its corresponding procedure.

Is Dr. Redmond offering in-house physical therapy?

Dr. Redmond is actively building an in-house physical therapy program at his Jacksonville clinic. This program will allow patients to receive post-operative rehabilitation in the same facility as their surgical care, with close coordination between the clinical team. In the meantime, all of Dr. Redmond's PT protocols are available for download above so that patients can work with their local physical therapist using his specific guidelines.
